What is herpes? Many people do not know herpes correctly. But knowing what is herpes and the harmfulness of herpes is a very important thing for everyone. By knowing what is herpes and the infectiousness of herpes, you can protect you and your sex partner effectively.

The explanation form CDC will let you know what is herpes briefly: Herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that any sexually active person can get. It is caused by two different but closely related viruses. The viruses are herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both are easy to catch. They remain in the body for life and can produce symptoms that come and go. Both forms of herpes can infect the oral area, the genital area, or both. When the infection is on or near the mouth, it is called oral herpes. Oral herpes is caused most often by HSV-1. When a herpes infection is on or near the sex organs, it is called genital herpes. Genital herpes is caused most often by HSV-2.

More than half of American adults have oral herpes. And about one in six American adults have genital herpes. Most people with the virus don’t have herpes symptoms. It is important to know that even without signs of the disease, it can still spread to sexual partners.

HSV frequently causes psychological distress and may play a major role in the spread of HIV (HSV causes people to be more susceptible to HIV).  Although there is not yet a cure for herpes, appropriate treatment is effective in helping to control the disease.
