Herpes infected pregnant women run the risk of transmitting the virus to their offspring and it is estimated that as many as 2000 newborns are affected with neonatal herpes annually. There are so many risks and complication for an expectant mother living with herpes. The possibility of transmitting the virus to the infant is high if the virus is present in the birth canal during delivery.

Also, a pregnant woman may transmit the infection to her offspring through the placenta if she acquires the infection for the first time during her first trimester. An infection of this manner can cause a serious birth defect or miscarriage- the worst thing that can ever happen to a pregnant woman. However, being infected with herpes while pregnant is not all doom and gloom as the right information and care can significantly reduce the chances of transmitting the infection to the baby.
